Job description
We are currently seeking a Working Student (d/m/w) in Data Science & AI Projects to join our Property & Casualty (P&C) International Operations team in Cologne starting in April 2026. The role is initially planned for one year, and we are keen to continue the collaboration beyond this period. While a full-year availability is preferred, candidates who can commit to at least six months are still encouraged to apply. The position requires a weekly working commitment of 19 hours.
Your Role
You will work closely with our AI Development and Analytics team and contribute to Data Science & AI projects across our Property & Casualty (P&C) business. From exploring data and defining problems to developing models and implementing solutions, you will be part of the full analytics lifecycle. Your tasks will include:
- Loading, cleaning, transforming, and exploring data to gain meaningful insights and build a solid understanding of the underlying issues.
- Building reproducible data pipelines that make analyses efficient, transparent, and easy to iterate on.
- Applying statistical methods such as GLMs as well as modern machine learning and AI techniques to help solve business problems.
- Developing and implementing generative AI use cases including prompt engineering and light fine-tuning to support decision-making and boost efficiency.
- Using in-code AI tools and agents to automate workflows and enhance data applications.
- Creating clear and engaging visualizations to help teams and stakeholders understand results.
- Writing functions and packages that automate recurring tasks, standardize processes, and contribute to scalable solutions.
- Helping communicate findings in various formats, ensuring results are accessible and actionable.
As part of these projects, you will work with real datasets and gain hands-on experience in Advanced Analytics, Data Science, and AI within a global reinsurance environment.
Requirements
Do you have experience in SQL?, Do you have a Master's degree?, * You are enrolled in an advanced Bachelor's or Master's degree program in mathematics, computer science, economics, finance, natural sciences or a related field.
- Good knowledge of R is essential; experience with packages such as tidyverse, data.table, httr2, shiny, targets or similar tools is a plus.
- A strong interest in learning new methods and technologies drives you, and you enjoy approaching challenges with analytical thinking and pragmatic problem-solving skills.
- You bring a basic understanding of AI concepts - for example LLMs, prompt engineering, chaining techniques, or structured outputs.
- Experience with tools like git, SQL, Quarto, typst, bash, or Python is an advantage, but not required.
- Collaboration comes naturally to you: you communicate clearly, adapt quickly, and enjoy working in a team environment.
- You have a very good to fluent command of English, as much of the work will be conducted in an international setting.
