Job description

IUCN Bangladesh is implementing the Updating Faunal Red List of Bangladesh Project to reassess existing species and evaluate new faunal groups following the latest IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. The project requires strong GIS and spatial data support to ensure accurate species distribution mapping, habitat analysis, and spatial database management. The GIS Assistant will support the Red List team in geospatial data processing, mapping, and technical documentation to ensure timely and high-quality delivery of project outputs., Under the overall guidance of the Country Representative, under the direct supervision of Programme Manager, Species and Habitats functional reporting of Red List Group Coordinator (Programme Associate), the GIS Assistant will be part of a diversified team and will be responsible for implementing the project activities. The position will support the implementation of Faunal Red List assessment activities, coordination with experts and stakeholders, and timely delivery of project outputs., Under the overall guidance of the Country Representative, the direct supervision of the Programme Manager, Species and Habitats, and the functional supervision of the respective Programme Associate (Red List Group Coordinator), the GIS Assistant will undertake the following specific responsibilities: *Support species distribution mapping and extent of occurrence (EOO) / area of occupancy (AOO) calculations following IUCN Red List guidelines. *Assist in habitat suitability and threat mapping for assessed species. *Generate standardized national-level distribution maps for Red List publications. *Compile, clean, and organize geospatial datasets from field surveys, literature, and remote sensing sources. *Maintain and update spatial databases and metadata following IUCN standards. *Ensure quality control, versioning, and secure storage of GIS data. *Assist in integrating spatial data into the Red List web database. *Produce high-quality maps, figures, and infographics for Red List reports, books, and web platforms. *Prepare geo-referenced species maps for publication. *Assist the project team during field surveys involving GPS data collection and other relevant methods. *Support geo-referencing of historical species records. *Provide technical support during assessor workshops and training events. *Support preparation of dashboards and visual summaries when required. *Assist the M&E Focal Point and the Project Manager with indicator tracking, data collection and analysis, quality assurance, and timely reporting following M&E framework of the project. *Contribute to progress reports, technical notes, and documentation. *Maintain organized archives of spatial outputs and project files. *Coordinate with Red List Team Leaders, Co-Team Leader, Lead Assessors, Project Manager, Group Coordinators, Red List Assessor Groups (RAGs) and Red List project team on spatial data needs. *Provide overall management and logistical support to the Project Manager in planning, implementation, and reporting of project activities. *Perform any other duties assigned by the Programme Manager, Species and Habitat and Programme Associate of IUCN Bangladesh to ensure the successful completion of project objectives.

Requirements

  • Education -With 2-4 years experience in relevant field; some managerial skills preferred. Master's degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Forestry, Zoology, URP or other related fields from a reputed University or institution with a strong academic track record. Bachelor's degree with additional two (02) years of experience demonstrating strong relevant skills will be considered.

*Experience and Training -At least two (02) years' professional experience relevant to the assignment as defined in the terms of reference. -Good presentation skills; -Advanced training in GIS and geospatial analysis. -Strong practical experience with GIS software and tools, particularly QGIS and/or ArcGIS, including spatial data management, map production, and spatial analysis. -Hands-on experience with remote sensing and earth observation data, such as satellite imagery (Landsat, Sentinel), land-use/land-cover analysis, change detection, and basic image classification. -Experience in field data collection and integration, including GPS-based surveys, mobile data collection tools (e.g., KoBo/ODK), and linking spatial data with socio-environmental datasets. -Proven ability to apply GIS in development or environmental projects, including producing decision-support maps, technical reports, and working with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. -Proficient in Microsoft Office (i.e., MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and Adobe Photoshop).

*Other Competencies -Ability to proactively learn (coachability), observe, and adapt in line with project objectives and evolving communication needs. -Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders. -Good time management, task prioritisation, and multitasking skills, with attention to detail. -Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively within teams, as and when required. -Sound decision-making and problem-solving skills, particularly in dynamic project environments. -Demonstrated ability to function as a team player with strong work ethics and a cooperative mindset.

*Language -Good presentation, writing and spoken communication skills in English and Bangla are essential.
