Job description
THALES are looking for a Product Support Engineer to provide support for the Optronics Mast Visual System and the Periscope Visual System at the Glasgow OME site in Govan and on occasion onboard the submarine platforms based at HM Naval Base Clyde.
Product support engineers (PSE) are required to work with a degree of autonomy, reacting to problems as they arise. You may be required to liaise with other dockyard support engineers PSEs will assist in the identification and rectification of technical problems and issues, with support from the Senior Product Support Engineer and Glasgow Engineering team as appropriate, fulfilling the aim of minimising any platform impact.
This role will be Govan based, assisting with a variety of naval programmed activities however, a key aspect of this role is the requirement to visit the waterfront at short notice, these visits may be local (Faslane) and on occasion, as part of an international delegation., * Supporting the Industry and Engineering teams in a diverse range of activities; product development and manufacture, installation and test, IVVQ, product rollout, internal / external training etc.
- Respond to problem reports and provide engineered solutions for a range of submarine borne visual equipment.
- Attend Material Review Boards, to assess problem items and devise a suitable response for rectification.
- Assist in ensuring a timely and appropriate response to Customer enquiries
- Strive to reduce the number and duration of open OPDEFs for Visual Equipment.
- Assist in maintenance of platform Build Standard Records.
- Advise on any areas of handbooks / documentation / training that are deemed non-optimal or deficient for investigation or action.
- Compile risk assessments for planned work.
- Applicants must be flexible and able to react to short notice peripatetic activities.
- You may be asked to assist ship's staff to investigate, report, and resolve defects, keeping the stakeholders informed of all situations that may give rise to the need for corrective action.
- You must be flexible enough to respond to requests of many different natures within the naval business.
- Be able to produce concise and accurate technical reports.
Requirements
- Knowledge of Installation, Testing and Commissioning of large electrical / electronic systems.
- Understanding / knowledge of IVVQ processes.
- Understanding / knowledge of health and safety aspects of working on or around heavy machinery.
- Previous experience in this or a related field of expertise.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience of investigating issues in complex systems.
- Ability to work under pressure, as part of the larger support and engineering teams.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience in the use of standard test equipment (oscilloscopes, pressure gauges, etc.).
- Ability to support activities.
- Willingness to be flexible around working hours to respond to issues in a timely manner.
This role will require SC Clearance. It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant will undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance. Please visit the UKSV website for further guidance.
To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years' residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.
